Thalassery is a city located on the shores of the Arabian Sea. It was one of the first municipalities in Malabar, which came into existence on 1st November 1866, under the 10th Act of 1865.When the municipality was formed, it was known as the Municipal Commission. G.A. Ballard, the Collector of Mala Bar, was the first President of the Municipal Commission. When it became the Municipal Council in 1885, A.F. Lamoral, a European lawyer, became the first Chairman of the Council.

The city's boundaries were first expanded in 1880. The then municipal area was from Koduvallipalam in the north to Mylan Kunnu in the south and from Kadaloram in the west to the Eranjoli river in the east. The Talai area and the Mannayadu, Kunnoth, Kavumbhagam and Vayalalam areas were newly annexed to the municipality in 1961, increasing the area to 15.35 sq km.Kodiyeri Panchayat was merged with Thalassery Municipality on 27.10.90, separated and merged again on 01.04.93.

Thalassery is a city that has lost several hectares of land due to sea erosion. If you look from the west of the stadium, the only land that can be seen in the sea, 350-400 meters away, is the rock formations that were once the site of the Thalassery fish market.

It is also said that the walls built by Overbury's sloop saved the city from sea attacks.

This is a land area between 11° 44 north latitude and 75° 26 east longitude, with elevations ranging from 2.5 meters to 30 meters above sea level.
